Two unique destinations in one fabulous day…

This one day tour from Auckland to Hobbiton Movie Set and Waitomo Caves combines two unique and very different destinations in one fabulous day.

Hobbiton Movie Set

We head south from Auckland, guided by New Zealand’s longest river, the Waikato through picturesque farmland to the Hobbiton Movie Set. The set is located on a 1,250 acre sheep farm with beautiful views across the Kaimai Ranges. The set itself covers 10 acres and includes Hobbit Holes, The Green Dragon Inn, The Mill and other features of The Shire – all set amidst beautiful farmland and beside a picturesque lake.

Enjoy a fascinating two hour guided tour of the the Hobbiton Movie set. The set is now maintained as a tourist attraction and so the hobbit holes, gardens and buildings are much as you would have seen them in the movies – they still have the washing on the line as if filming has only just finished.

Following the guided tour, relax and enjoy a free drink at the Green Dragon Inn – choose from English Ale, Apple Cider or non-alcoholic Ginger Beer. The Green Dragon Inn is now a permanent building with a truly authentic atmosphere and a crackling fire in winter making a surprisingly authentic experience out of a fictional story! Your guided tour is followed by lunch (included) at the Shires Rest Café and shopping in The Shire Souvenir Store.

This tour always leaves visitors wanting to watch the movies again (or for the first time for those who have never seen them before). Director Peter Jackson’s interpretation of this fictional place from J. R. R. Tolkien’s famous books fits so well into the New Zealand countryside we can only marvel at the vision and talent of the people who created Hobbiton. We are very happy to have it as a now permanent part of our landscape and to see so many visitors leave the tour with a smile on their face after a rich and authentic experience of this special place.

Waitomo Caves

We continue our journey to the Waitomo Valley, gateway to the spectacular Waitomo Caves, where tiny glow worms light the caves like a starry night.

Under the farmland of the Waitomo area lies a network of caves, sinkholes and underground rivers. The caves were carved by underground streams shaping the soft limestone over thousands of years. Many of the caves have amazing stalactites and stalagmites built gradually over centuries from minerals contained in water that trickles through the caves. But what makes these caves truly unique is the the glow worm, Arachnocampa luminosa. These little creatures are unique to New Zealand. Thousands of them line the cave walls radiating their unmistakable luminescent light like little tiny fairy lights.

During your tour, a local expert guide provides a fascinating commentary on the Waitomo Caves’ history and geology as you explore the caves on foot and by boat. The boat ride takes you silently down a peaceful underground stream lit only by the millions of tiny glow-worms lining the walls and roof of the cave. Truly awe-inspiring.

Waitomo was one of New Zealand’s original tourist destination. Its popularity has endured and you’ll soon understand why. Lonely Planet calls the Waitomo Caves a ‘must do’.

We make our way back to Auckland through more picturesque countryside.
