A small group tour of two unique caves on private farmland…

Enjoy the natural wonder of the Waitomo Spellbound glow worm caves.

Your guided tour with a small group takes you through two caves and on an underground boat ride. Thousands of tiny glow worms light the caves like a starry night amongst spectacular limestone formations.

Lonely Planet calls the glow worm caves at Waitomo a ‘must do’, and you’ll soon understand why.

Waitomo Spellbound Caves

Just a few hours south of Auckland lies one of New Zealand’s most unique places: the majestic and awe-inspiring Spellbound Glow worm Caves at Waitomo.

Under the farmland of the Waitomo area lies a network of caves, sinkholes and underground rivers. The caves were carved by underground streams shaping the soft limestone over thousands of years. Many of the caves have amazing stalactites and stalagmites built gradually over centuries from minerals contained in water that trickles through the caves. But what makes these caves truly unique is the the glow worm, Arachnocampa luminosa. These little creatures are unique to New Zealand. Thousands of them line the cave walls radiating their unmistakable luminescent light like little tiny fairy lights.

Tour Two Caves with a Local Guide

This tour combines unique scenery with true Kiwi hospitality. On this tour we visit the Spellbound caves, two unique caves located on private farmland a short drive from Waitomo township. A local guide leads you in small groups, a maximum of 15 visitors, on a three hour tour of the two caves with a short picnic break in between.

These caves are rich with interesting limestone formations. Your guide explains some interesting facts about the caves, shows you the glow worms up close and describes the life cycle of these fascinating little creatures.

Underground Boat Ride

A highlight of this tour is the boat ride on an underground stream. On board the boat we glide silently and gently through the darkness and experience Waitomo’s largest, brightest and most breathtaking glow worm display. The only light is from thousands of tiny glow worms that light the caves like a starry night and the only sound is the gently running water beneath the boat.

Picnic Style ‘Cuppa’ on the Farm

The caves under this area make for interesting and unique shapes in the hills and valleys above ground as well. Kiwis call it “limestone country”. Between the two caves, relax and enjoy picnic style “cuppa” (tea or coffee and biscuits), in a rustic shelter on the farm. Enjoy the unique landscape of this interesting area and get a true taste of farm hospitality.

On our return trip to Auckland, relax and enjoy views of the surrounding countryside and grazing cows.
